Many of our clients are targeted by search engine optimising
companies on a very regular basis. Companies offering
to manage pay per click campaigns also feature regularly
in the communications received - and passed on to us -
by our clients.
We find that many of these companies will send, as proof
of their expertise, a list of search terms under which
their sites are currently highly listed in the organic
listings in the various search engines, many of which
are "Powered by Google" and on Google in particular.
Invariably, a search a week or two later shows that
these sites have disappeared from the listings. Why? Only
Google really knows the answer to that, but luckily there's
more than one way to skin a cat.
We put into operation a multi-pronged strategy for marketing
our clients that level out the ups and downs of the organic
listings to maintain a steady stream of traffic and one
which increases over time as our tweaks improve the campaign
strategy.
Our advice is to give it a week or so and check those
listings again, before you shell out any of your business'
hard earned money.
A further piece of advice is to check those listings
for what they are. Anyone with a little nous can get a
top ranking on a search engine for carefully chosen search
terms. We've seen some SEOs boasting of number one positions
for terms no-one in their right mind would be searching
for, or so tight that this could be achieved by virtually
anyone. One recent example was for a "ping-pong shop
in ***** (location deleted)". Another boasted they
were at the top for their own company name - a misspelling
of a rarely used word.
