Placing text ads, banners and patches on websites can
be a useful method of generating relevant, targeted traffic.
It is after all, what is making Google the money making
machine it now is.
To be effective, the adverts, in form of text links,
banners and patches do of course need to be relevant to
what the surfer is looking for. So, strategic placement
of the adverts is crucial.
However, Google and other engines make this relatively
simple. A single piece of code supplied by Google etc.
and placed into a web page can display advertisements
related to the text content of the page, whatever the
content may be. Owners of websites are taking advantage
of this, earning revenue from their websites simply by
adding Google Ads and seeing the (free) money roll in
thereafter.
But paying for 100,000 "impressions" (adverts
viewed by surfer) in places where it is not relevant to
what the surfers are looking for at that time, can be
a major waste of time and money.
So, be sure any banners you purchase are of course, being
displayed strategically - and that proof can be made available
as to the true number of impressions, where seen etc.
It goes without saying that there would be little point
bannering a mortgage company on a portal dedicated to
saucepans.
